“Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.” “Do not stop him” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us.

MARK 9, 38-40 (NIV)

 

The Apostle John comes to Jesus with news that someone outside their group is casting out demons in His name. Jesus responds, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” This situation reveals two things deeply rooted in our human nature: jealousy and the desire for exclusivity. The apostles believed they had a monopoly on acting in Jesus' name. They thought only they had the right to use the power given by the Master. But Jesus, as always, shifts their perspective. The essence here is that God's grace is available to everyone and is not confined to a narrow group of chosen ones (...)
